Jun Liu

       Jun Liu , a Xinghua Distinguished Chair Professor at Tsinghua University and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. He obtained a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from Peking University in 1985 and a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Chicago in 1991. Since 2000, Liu Jun has been a tenured professor in the Department of Statistics at Harvard University, and concurrently served as a professor in the Department of Biostatistics at Harvard from 2003 to 2015. He was an assistant professor in the Department of Statistics at Harvard (1991 - 1994), and an assistant professor, associate professor, and tenured professor in the Department of Statistics at Stanford University (1994 - 2004). In 2015, he led the establishment of the Center for Statistical Research at Tsinghua University and served as its honorary director until 2024. In July 2024, as the director of the Preparatory and Development Committee, he led the establishment of the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Tsinghua University.

       Jun Liu has been engaged in research in the fields of Bayesian statistical theory, Monte Carlo methods, statistical machine learning, state - space models and time series, bioinformatics, computational biology, etc., and has made outstanding contributions, exerting a profound influence on the fields of big data processing and machine learning. In 2002, he received the COPSS Presidents' Award, which is recognized as the highest honor in the international statistical community. In 2010, he won the Morningside Gold Medal in Applied Mathematics, the highest honor for Chinese - speaking mathematicians in applied mathematics (awarded every three years to those under 45 years old). In 2014, he was named by ISI as a mathematician with highly cited papers. In 2016, he received the Hsu Memorial Award from the Pan - Chinese Statistical Association (awarded every three years to those under 51 years old). In 2004 and 2005, he became a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association respectively. In 2022, he was elected a Fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology. Professor Liu Jun has also served as the co - editor - in - chief of the Journal of the American Statistical Association (JASA) and associate editor of several top international statistical journals. As of May 2025, he has published more than 300 papers in various top international academic journals (such as Science, Nature, Cell, JASA, JMLR, etc.) and books, and one monograph, with over 90,000 citations (Google Scholar).
